ABOUT

ABOUT
Flavia Thumshirn

WHAT WE DO:

I view the creation of our projects as a shared journey with my clients. This process is an important part of my work. Trustworthy exchange is as crucial as the energy within the team of client, architects, electrical planners and everyone else in the project involved.

A sensitive approach to the surroundings and existing conditions, the client’s wishes, nature, and daylight, while always keeping an eye on the essentials, has been a core part of my work from the beginning.

The interplay of architecture and light plays an essential role – through sensitive coordination, I create an atmosphere where you feel comfortable. By independent from the manufacturer choosing the most appropriate fixtures or creating custom solutions when necessary, I ensure a seamless experience from inception to completion.

EXPERIENCE:

A significant portion of my experience comes from more than 20 years of freelance collaboration with Ingo Maurer. Until his passing in 2019, I was fortunate to be involved in numerous objects and projects worldwide. I had the opportunity to design objects and lead projects in Italy, England, Russia, China, Hong Kong, and the Bahamas, working with a fantastic team of designers and craftsmen, and realizing these projects with an intercultural team.

Despite my collaboration with Ingo Maurer, I have always pursued my own projects. Starting in 2000, I designed the lighting for the Neue Sammlung at the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich. This was followed by projects such as the luxurious Resorthotel Obersalzberg, the Palais at the Opera in Munich, and many more. Since 1999, I have been developing ideas, concepts, planning, and realizing unique projects, both large and small.

After my studies of industrial design in Munich, Germany.I worked as a lighting designer at Studio Sottsass Associati in Milan under the direction of Ettore Sottsass and James Irvine. Among other things, I designed lights for Zumtobel Staff Austria, an elevator interior for Schindler Switzerland and the light guiding system at Malpensa Airport. During my time at the University of Applied Science I worked for Massimo Iosa Ghini in Bologna, mainly on interior design projects and glass objects.

APPROACH:

Light significantly influences our well-being. I am convinced that good lighting can positively enhance the design of architecture and spaces. Light is a fundamental factor in our lives; it evokes emotions and affects our daily lives. It can make us happy and content, even heal.

My holistic approach allows me to operate in a variety of scales, from light and color to furniture and product design, equipment, and creative direction. I approach small details with the same dedication as complex tasks.

Human needs and architecture is my starting points. With my sense of aesthetics, form, and craftsmanship, I set a high standard that can be both seen and felt.

My goal is to create the perfect lighting to meet your requirements.

PERSONAL:

My studio is placed at a beautiful small heart-shaped lake in Bavaria. Being Swiss and German, I am fluent in German, English, and Italian. I have two lovely daughters and enjoy spending time with my family in the mountains.
